What is the Naqshbandi Tariqah?

One of the most widespread Sufi orders in the world, the Naqshbandi Tariqah traces its lineage directly to the...

The Naqshbandi Ṭarīqa is a major spiritual path within Sufism, the mystical dimension of Islam. A ṭarīqa (Arabic: “path” or “way”) refers to a method of spiritual development aimed at drawing closer to God.

What makes the Naqshbandi path unique?

The Naqshbandi Ṭarīqa is known for its emphasis on:
•Silent remembrance (dhikr) of God (unlike many other Sufi orders that use vocal chanting)
•Inner spirituality over outward display
•Strict adherence to Islamic law (Sharia)
•Being spiritually engaged while living an active life (not withdrawing from society)

Origins and founder

The order is named after Baha-ud-Din Naqshband, a 14th-century Sufi master from Bukhara. However, the spiritual lineage (called silsila) traces back through earlier teachers all the way to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Core practices

Followers (called murids) typically engage in:
•Dhikr (remembrance of God) – often silent and continuous
•Sohbah (spiritual companionship) with a teacher
•Muraqabah (meditation/awareness of God)
•Personal discipline, humility, and ethical conduct
